National Historic Landmark!
The Clamagore was built near the end of WWII and entered service as the Cold War dawned. It is a Balao class submarine, the largest in the Navy at that time. Modified several times during her career to meet the demands of the Cold War, she is the last surviving example of a GUPPY Type III submarine in the United States!
After 30 years of distinguished service to the nation, Clamagore retired from the active fleet to serve as a floating museum at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina. She was granted National Historic Landmark status in 1989!
